Introduction to Relative Humidity (RH)

YC-200(3.2) Controller
To determine the humidity setting for a cigar humidifier, it is essential to understand what relative humidity is. The quantity of water present in the air, which is in the form of vapor, with reference to the total maximum capacity of the air at that specific temperature, is termed relative humidity. Relative humidity is normally specified in terms of percentage. The presence of humidity isn't a problem itself. The problem arises when the humidity level in the specific environment falls outside the recommended range and certain steps must be taken to maintain the required humidity level, depending on the environment and the nature of the activity. Among many tricks and techniques, using humidifiers has so far been the most successful for controlling humidity levels.

Importance of the Right Humidity Level for Cigars

Keeping track of the humidity level, controlling it, and then maintaining it consistently is key to the long-term preservation of the cigars. It’s not only that the cigars are preserved, but they are preserved so effectively that they remain fresh, crisp, and flavorful, like the day they were first, as long as the right level of humidity is maintained throughout the preservation process.

Any humidity level below the required range will tend to make your cigars dry, stale, and less aromatic, and may irritate the throat. Whereas, any increase in range will also affect their crispness and flavor, making them damp and, in extreme cases, causing them to rot. It must also be noted that in both scenarios, the burning capacity of the cigars becomes uneven due to fluctuations in humidity.

What is the Ideal Humidity Range and Why

As mentioned earlier, tracking humidity and consistently maintaining it are the most essential parts of effective, long-term storage for your cigars. For this, one must know the required range needed for the cigars.

For storing cigars intended for daily smoking, the ideal humidity range is 65% to 70%. This range will ensure that the cigars remain flavorful and burn evenly. On the contrary, if you are planning to preserve the cigars for a longer period, either as a collection or to enhance their flavor, the relative humidity must be between 62% and 80%.

We can conveniently conclude it with this simple chart:

For Preserving Cigars

It must also be taken into consideration that the ideal humidity range depends on the size of the cigars. So, remaining within the lowest recommended range, i.e., 65%-67%, is the best choice.

Recommended Humidity Level As Per Scenario

Apart from the general recommended humidity range, let me briefly outline the humidity ranges recommended for different types of humidors and surroundings.

Standard: 65%–69% RH

This is the standard humidity range applicable to cigars that are preserved and used simultaneously. It is recommended that cigars used daily be kept within an ideal humidity range to be stored for the short term.

Long-Term Aging: 65% RH

A humidity level of 65% must be maintained for cigar enthusiasts who prefer their cigars matured and full of flavor. Long-term aging requires a lower but constant humidity level throughout the preservation to ensure the aging process is as smooth and effective as possible.

Wood/Acrylic Humidors: 69%–70% RH

The wood/acrylic humidors need a humidity level of 69-70%. The only difference between a wooden and an acrylic humidor is that the wooden humidor needs a specific treatment for its porous surface. You must wipe a wooden humidor with distilled water and keep a container of water in it for 1-2 days.

Tupperdors/Airtight Containers: 62%–65% RH

The ideal humidity range for an airtight container or humidor is 62% to 65%. Because airtight containers don’t let humidity in or let moisture out, the humidity level inside the humidor remains constant for much longer. These tupperdors are non-porous and do not absorb moisture, which is why any level exceeding the recommended range may cause the humidity to rise very quickly.

Do Climatic Conditions Affect the Setting Up of the Humidity Level

Yes, climatic factors are indeed among the most important considerations when setting up the humidifier. The determination of the right humidity level is made keeping in view the temperature conditions, humidity levels, and other climatic factors of the specific area.

In humid areas, humidifiers are recommended to be set to a lower humidity level, as the level is already high in the air. Opposing it, the humidity level in the dry regions must be set a little higher, as the humidity in the air is too scarce.

In high-altitude or mountainous areas, the relative humidity must be higher, around 70-72%. It is because the air at such height is dry and thin, causing the moisture emitted by the humidifier to be used more rapidly.

Let me further clarify the effect of temperature on the right humidity level. The following table will clearly depict for you the recommended humidity level against the temperature conditions of a certain area:

Other Factors to be Considered for the Recommended Humidity Level to be Set

Type of Cigars

It must also be considered that multiple types of cigars are sold under a hundred brand names. Although looking the same, they vary in terms of taste, flavor, and handling. You must be aware of the appropriate handling techniques and preferred humidity range for the specific cigars you are using.

Using Distilled Water

Water purified through distillation is primarily recommended for cigar humidifiers. It is free from all the impurities and minerals that would otherwise be present in the tap water. Using distilled water prevents mineral buildup and mold and mildew growth inside the humidifier. It can, in turn, affect the quality and aroma of the cigars present in the humidor. It is also readily and easily available.

Avoid Over-Humidifying

As crucial humidity is for preserving cigars, over-humidifying may reverse the preservation process. There must be a check and balance on the humidity level, preferably by a hygrometer. An excess of humidity may lead to mold and fungal growth in the cigar, and in a worst-case scenario, can also cause the cigar to rot.

Stay Consistent and Keep Tracking with a Hygrometer

The key to managing the right humidity level is to constantly monitor and track it. You can use a hygrometer for this purpose. It helps with precise tracking of the humidity level. A fluctuation in the level can be tracked instantly, and the humidifier can be adjusted accordingly.

Learning by Experience

Although the experts have set the preferred humidity level, and you have been guided a lot on that. But it is also a fact that you have to find the most suitable humidity level for your cigar’s type and size by experimenting. You know the recommended range; the only trick is to set the humidity within that range and experiment, observing the humidifier’s performance and the cigars’ condition. Only through initial testing and trial and error will you find the most suitable humidity level for your cigars.

Wrapping Up

As convenient as the cigar humidifier may seem, the real mastery lies in determining the ideal humidity level. Setting the right humidity, taking into account the type of cigar, the kind of humidifier, and the area’s climatic factors, is key to your cigars’ prolonged shelf life. Only then will you experience the full potential of GETJOEAIR’s premium cigar humidifiers.
